Rita Hollings Science Center Renovation & Addition

(Designed in association with HDR Architecture)
College of Charleston   |   Charleston, South Carolina

The College of Charleston’s Rita Hollings Science Center (RHSC) was an existing 3-story science building adjacent to the Physician’s Auditorium at the heart of the CofC campus, in a National Trust for Historic Preservation "Historic District". This project included  renovation of the original 1972 Rita Hollings Science Center Building and a new 3-story addition. The total square footage of the renovated facility is 149,000 GSF, including a rebuilt Physicians Auditorium with two additional floors for faculty offices. The center serves as the home for the science departments, including Biology, Psychology and Physics. The facility houses classrooms, offices, research laboratories, teaching laboratories, collaboration spaces, telescope and roof deck viewing area, vivarium for animal holdings and a flexible, flat-floor auditorium. The new multifunctional auditorium will feature a flat-floor with no fixed seating to provide a large, flexible format that allows for easy reconfiguration and higher utilization. This project was designed in collaboration with HDR Architects. The project was awarded two Green Globes certifications.
