Interim Children's Emergency Department

(in association with Stanley Beaman & Sears & CannonDesign)
Medical University of South Carolina   |   Charleston, South Carolina

The lobby space is adjacent to an existing port-cochere providing a prominent identity to the department and public drop off. The space available for clinical areas was separated from the lobby by other existing hospital functions, therefore graphics and wayfinding became critical. Creating a connection between the two remote spaces and a themed aesthetic to calm young patients in traumatic situations were the major design challenges in this project.

The Lobby space contains a waiting room, registration desk, triage, and administrative offices. The clinical space houses eight exam rooms, two special procedure rooms, two isolation rooms, a physician consult room, a nurses care station, utility rooms, a staff lounge, pantry/medicine room, and administrative offices.

The project has won a TOP 5 spot in HEALTHCARE DESIGN Magazine’s 2010 Remodel/Redesign Competition.
