The buildings at 379-381 King
Street, referred to as the “Davenport Buildings” have undergone several
evolutions through the years. The larger, three story building was built
in the 1700s, remodeled in the late 1800s, and modernized during the
50’s and 60’s. The first floor served as retail space, while the upper
floors housed apartments. A 1999 fire damaged this building and an
adjacent two story wooden structure. As a recognized “gateway” to King
Street and the Marion Square redevelopment area, great attention was
placed on regaining former architectural details such as the cornice and
decorative elements associated with its turn of the twentieth century
appearance.
Non- original storefronts were replaced with modern units to enhance
both the retail presence and historic character. Historic aspects of the
apartment interiors were retained- woodwork, mantelpieces, doors,
casings and transoms. An elevator, sprinkler system and items necessary
for ADA compliance were part of the building’s new construction.
